What Are Traumatic Wounds? Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment

What Are Traumatic Wounds?

Also known as extensive wounds, traumatic wounds are defined as sudden or unplanned injuries that can range from minor to severe, for example, injuries from road traffic accidents, gunshot wounds, domestic injuries, or burns from heat, cold, electricity, and chemicals, etc. In other words, traumatic wounds generally include cuts, lacerations or puncture wounds, skin tears, bites or penetrating wounds, etc. It can be the cuts by knife, skin abrasions from metal or glass, skin crushing, or animal bites. A huge proportion of people surviving their injuries suffer from temporary or permanent disabilities.

In simple words, trauma is severe damage to the soft tissues in the skin. It is a medical condition where the soft tissues of the skin sustain an injury or break down. When the skin is ripped or torn and has a jagged appearance, it is an acute wound and it typically contains foreign bodies such as gravel, glass, metal, or sand. Penetrating wounds are deeper and considered the most severe of all traumatic wounds as they form as the result of being stabbed or sustaining any gunshot wound. A traumatic cut wound occurs when a sharp object penetrates the skin or the underlying subcutaneous tissues.
